  • Be aware of Samy, the 'Hero'

By Clark Pan. Posted: 4:42pm, 03.07.2009

On October 4, 2005, around 3am, Samy Kamkar logged on to MySpace. He began the day with 73 friends. At around 11am, he had about 200 friends. Just 2 hours later he had 1,000 friends. A couple more hours pass and his friends list had grown to 200,000. By 10:30pm, Samy Kamkar had over 1 million friends. It was at this point that MySpace was forced offline.

How did Samy become so popular? It’s simple. He wrote a piece of code which he put on his profile page which ensured that every time somebody visited his profile page, they automatically (and without any knowledge or consent from MySpace) added Samy to their friends list. This in turn ensured that anyone who was added to Samy’s friend’s list, now had the code on their profile page. Now, anybody that visited anyone’s page that has the code on it would be added to Samy’s friends list, exponentially growing list of Samy's friends.

This story highlights the necessity of good programming when it comes to building anything that allows users to upload content, be it a forum, or any kind of comments system. Whilst everyone should be able to use popular systems available for your social media/blog etc solutions, be aware and understand that they do have vulnerabilities, and there are no limit to the supply of people online with too much time on their hands and nothing better to do than to mess with your website.

The consequences of Samy's actions? He got 3 years of probation, 90 days of community service, and an undisclosed amount of restitution to MySpace. Samy was just 19 when he made the worm.

5 tips for effective time management

By Candice Knowsley. Posted: 3.37pm, 10.06.2009

For a Project Manager or indeed anyone with multiple clients or a million things to do each day, three little words can make a world of difference: effective time management. All too often you hear ‘there are just not enough hours in the day’ - it could be a simple case of needing to give your time management skills a little love and a bit of a tune-up. Here are 5 really simple tips to help you improve your time management:

    Prioritise carefully

Review your to-do list. Check it carefully at the beginning of each day and remember that not everything that appears urgent is necessarily important!

Set a block time to review emails

For me personally, this is the most difficult. Try checking your emails every hour. After a bit of practice it is amazing at how many uninterrupted tasks you can get through. And don’t forget to turn off all email alerts – beeps, pop ups etc. These alerts are effective time managements arch nemesis.

    Go digital!

There are lots of people who still like the ‘paper’ method of list making or diary entries whereas many more people still have moved across to the digital world. If you haven’t moved across yet, why not give it a go? Programs such as Outlook can be an excellent tool to improve your time management – to-do-lists, filing of emails, colour coding and prioritising based not only on importance but when a task landed on your plate – can be a real time saver.

Update your ‘to-do list’ more than once

Write a fresh list at the beginning of each day and before you leave each day. Each time a new task pops up, write it down straight away – it can take up a lot of time and energy trying to remember what is was you had to do. Having a to-do-list also makes it a lot easier to work out your real priorities.

    Delegate: Up, down or sideways

Delegate, delegate, delegate! If you really have too much work on, put your hand up and see if there is anyone else in the office that can help ease the pressure. You should, within reason, be delegating to your manager, your co-workers or your receptionist – anyone who has the capacity.

Top five things to think about when redesigning your site

By Brad Amos. Posted: 9:45am, 27.04.2009

For business owners, Marketing Managers and even the savviest Advertising professionals, designing a new website or rebuilding an existing site can be a daunting task. At Redbox Digital, we make every effort to simplify the process and take the frustration and uncertainty away. There are five key things to keep in mind when you are building or rebuilding your site

Visually appealing and simple home page

This is your first online impression… make sure it is a good one. With most consumers finding websites through search, you need to ensure the home page quickly and clearly reassures consumers they have arrived at the correct site. Provide a sentence or two about the company and then options to learn more about your offerings.

Intuitive navigation - Don’t make your customers think!

If your customer comes to your site and has to think about where they would find the information they are looking for, they are just as likely to leave as they are to keep digging. Don’t give them that option! Keep them reading or lead them directly to contact you to purchase your product or service.

    FAQ's

Make things as easy as possible for your prospective customers. Provide a concise FAQ’s and you will be amazed at the reduction in phone calls, emails and effort required by you and your staff to respond to the same questions over and over again.

    Don’t hide your contact information

The entire purpose of your site is increasing your business and exposure to new clients. Ensure that the second a potential customer wants to contact you they have multiple ways to do so. Phone numbers and email at a minimum but also include any social media links for your brand.

    A Call to Action

Every piece of marketing communication has an objective and your website is no different. Make sure your audience knows exactly what they should do when they land on your site. It needs to guide them to the information they want as well as the conversion you want from them. A perfect example of this would be the $300 million ‘continue’ button.
